According to The Australian Financial Review, about 40,000 homes and businesses in Albury-Wodonga will get 10 per cent hydrogen mixed in with their gas next year, in one bright spot for the clean hydrogen industry.
Australian Gas Infrastructure Group, owned by the Hong Kong-based conglomerate CK Group, has started building an electrolyser, which will make hydrogen by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. Blending hydrogen with gas is one way the gas network industry hopes to survive the transition to low-carbon energy where gas will have a smaller but crucial role. In the gas distribution network, pipelines can only include a maximum of 10 per cent to 15 per cent of hydrogen in the gas stream before affecting operations or requiring different consumer appliances. AGIG wants to have 100 per cent renewable gas, including from biogas and clean hydrogen, through its pipes by 2050. https://www.afr.com/companies/energy/homes-in-albury-gladstone-to-use-gas-hydrogen-blend-20241009-p5kh2n
