According to the Asahi Shimbun, the production of 'biomethanol' from digestion gas (biogas) generated from sewage sludge has started at the Niigata plant of Mitsubishi Gas Chemical for the first time in Japan. The produced methanol will be transformed into plastics and other products that can be used again in society. Mitsubishi Gas Chemical stating that it can contribute to the realisation of a decarbonised society.
According to the company, methanol is a type of alcohol, a colourless, transparent liquid. It is used as a raw material for plastics, adhesives, synthetic resins and synthetic fibres, as well as a fuel for alcohol lamps and ships. Digested gas used as raw material is purchased from the Araigo River Purification Centre, which is responsible for sewage treatment in three cities and one town between the Agano and Kaji Rivers in Niigata Prefecture. In June last year, the company signed a basic agreement on the purchase and sale of gas with the prefecture that owns the facility, and set up a facility within the centre to refine the gas. https://digital.asahi.com/articles/ASS8635FQS86UOHB00QM.html
