The Australian Financial Review, farm gate output is continuing to grow despite the agriculture sector being hit by drought across large parts of Australia's east coast, according to the National Farmers' Federation.
Total farm gate output was about $63 billion in 2016-17 and is projected to hit $84 billion by 2030, but NFF president Fiona Simson says the sector wants to beat that projection and exceed $100 billion over the same time frame.
"Even though we've had this devastating drought, other industries have stepped up," Ms Simson said, noting that horticulture, in particular, had experienced double-digit growth in recent years driven by increased access to overseas markets.
"We're becoming a more diverse and sustainable country," she said. "Drought is one of the challenges, but there are opportunities."
